If you are new to M3L, as we are, you might benefit from analysing his Instagram tagline, a flashy slogan that will help you understand the overall ethos behind the project. “ALL SWEET THINGS MUST EVENTUALLY TURN INTO CHAOS”, the Dutch DJ and producer enthusiastically shouts. It’s a sentence that partly resonates with his music, a blend of club-oriented grooves and evocative electronica that feels euphoric, brooding and hard-hitting. ‘Hate Me’ is the perfect example of that. In fact, one can identify the track’s sweet component (the melodious, haunting vocals and the many ambient textures), which in turns descend into dance-inducing euphoria (and chaos) as the piece progresses.
It’s a formula that works very well, one that draws from the bass-leaning mainstream landscape to then enter a more expressive and ethereal realm. It’s a wholesome, purposeful move from the Amsterdam-based creative: “I wanted to bring back the warehouse feel, give people the feeling something epic is happening, give them something refreshing.” Mission accomplished: dancing to ‘Hate Me’ carries a heightened cinematic energy and a keen sense of trepidation and urgency. It’s a record that will make you feel something, not just a kinetic aural companion.
Inspired by the likes of Kettama and Megra, among others, M3L is slowly developing a personal production style, one that will allow him to stand out in a rather crowded DJ scene. About ‘Hate Me’, he explains: “This is my first original track. I’ve been producing for other people for a long time, and I’ve finally found the pocket my own vision fits into. This track is the start of that. I truly believe we have to change the scene so more talent can rise in the scene instead of the copy-and-paste music we see right now.”
