We are able to examine ‘Would Be Better’ with substantial contextual knowledge, having previously covered Luan Luan. Based in Brighton and originally from Madrid, the talented producer, multi-instrumentalist, and songwriter approaches music and art-making with a highly meaningful allure, often channelling personal experience into material that’s vibrant and relatable. In the case of ‘Would Be Better’, the project’s latest single, the overarching theme is focused on a metaphorical post-mortem of a toxic relationship, as Luan Luan takes an inquisitive look at their past, now functioning as cathartic inspiration for their songs.
If previous effort ‘Nonsense’ introduced us to the many dangers of a toxic relationship, ‘Would Be Better’ challenges the status quo, asking the pivotal question “what if things could be better?”. Drenched in hope and understated optimism, the track reflects the personal journey Luan had to endure to escape a treacherous relationship dynamic. Now on safer emotional lands, the gifted aural visionary uses such vivid memories to craft absolutely immersive and eclectic musical nuggets, records that hit hard on a lyrical level, but also from a production standpoint, with saxophone and wholesome full-band goodness being put on full display.
“While the same unhealthy romantic relationship ties both songs together, ‘Would Be Better’ unconsciously seeks an ending by questioning the possibility of a better reality” – Luan Luan eloquently explains. The piece is the second instalment of a four-track debut EP, mixed and mastered by Paul Winstanley and expected before the end of the year.
