Lemon Return with Heartfelt Ballad ‘I’ll Be Near’

The keen reader might remember Dutch outfit Lemon from a feature we published earlier this year, praising ‘Maybe It’s You’ as “an unconventional, direct and honest breakup piece, part playful and part tragic”. We were truly impressed by the Amsterdam-based group’s eclectic blend of psychedelia, power pop and rock elements, giving birth to a unique aural character that Lemon define as ‘Nedchester’. Moreover, the band are also on a mission to release a single each month.

Guess what? It’s time for the October single, ‘I’ll Be Near’. Marking the tenth #lemon12 release of the year, the track takes a step back from the roaring, energetic aura of earlier efforts, instead showcasing the project’s mellow and evocative side. In fact, much of the piece is wrapped in cinematic goo, with a series of electronic strings and soundscapes helping Lemon explore deeper, more meaningful lyricism. With drums only entering the sonic picture towards the end, it’s clear that ‘I’ll Be Near’ represents Lemon’s foray into heartwarming, reflective ballads.

From a songwriting standpoint, the song delves into friendship, here highlighted as a crucial non-romantic connection, one we should all hold dear and close to our hearts. As Lemon explain: “‘I’ll Be Near’ is about the power of friendship – the peace of mind that comes from knowing someone’s got your back, even when things aren’t going so well. Is it about love? Could be. But it doesn’t have to be. It’s about someone who truly cares about you and will never let you down.”
