Leftfield Duo Imitation Return with Liminal Beauty ‘Raptures’

Following up on last year’s album ‘Time Rhymes’ – a collaboration with notable producer Kazuhiro Takeuchi – Hungarian duo Imitation advance their glorious artistic path with a new series of singles. After ‘Step on the Stone’, it’s now time for ‘Raptures’, a nuanced, leftfield and experimental effort steeped in gentle textures and a liminal haunting character. We wouldn’t expect anything less from such a bold, daring project.

Fierce explorers of the unknown, the gifted creative pair thrives on the aural fringe, collecting boundary-pushing pieces that defy human perception. Yet, they do appeal to us in a rather emotional way, a sign that Imitation still manage to find their cathartic energy, just in a rather unique, otherworldly way. ‘Raptures’ is the perfect evidence of that; incredibly poignant and evocative, the record communicates with the listeners thanks to modulating, chaotic arpeggios and ghost-like vocal reverbs.

The overall atmosphere is quite gloomy and cinematic, echoing references from the likes of Voice Actor and Koreless, but even from a quirky Thom Yorke, we’d say. It’s interesting how the piece shifts from its initial abstract shape to a more conventional, vocal-powered section in the end. A metaphorical transition that provides a complete and rewarding listening experience – and perhaps a fitting soundtrack for that poignant introspective moment we (or you) were waiting for.
