Lana Crow Returns with Meaningful, Blissful Single ‘What Brings You Back’

Lana Crow’s observant and purposeful songwriting strikes again, this time exploring the spiritual plane and the many ways we can connect to a higher being.

The keen reader might remember British songstress Lana Crow from a feature we published just a few months ago, celebrating ‘Orwellian Times’ as “a lyrical journey that’s bold and daring, but also honest and authentic”. Back then, we were happy to recognise Crow’s timely and observant songwriting allure, boldly highlighting societal decay and political turmoil. Such a powerful ethos has now shifted into a more abstract plane, as Lana veers her attention to the immaterial and the spiritual. That’s exactly the case for ‘What Brings You Back’, Crow’s latest single.

Just like its predecessor, ‘What Brings You Back’ focuses on the struggle between dark and light, although here it is reframed into higher frequencies. Partly religious, the song reaffirms the benefits of a constant divine presence and how it could lift people out of a gloomy reality. From a sonic standpoint, such a meaningful effort is layered upon a contemporary indie-pop production, a blissful arrangement that feels cinematic and bright, the perfect match for such relevant lyrics. Lana’s vocals dance over the piece with luscious grace and unmatched elegance, at times sounding like an angelic choir, at other times drenched in intimate flair.

Delving deeper into the ethos behind ‘What Brings You Back’, the English creative explains: “This is how I imagine God would talk to us if we could hear that voice. I do not think of God as some distant figure. I was told many years ago that it is this immense intelligence, half of which resides somewhere beyond our human comprehension and another within each human being, and it stuck with me. I believe we are here for experience, and we have more control over what we experience than we realise.”
