Crowning an incredibly productive year, Lana Crow is now back with her latest effort, ‘Orwellian Times’, a piece that asks the ever-relevant question, ‘Are we living in Orwellian Times?’ Channelling societal decadence and the global rise of authoritarianism, the London-based songstress unveils a lyrical journey that’s bold and daring, but also honest and authentic. We appreciate Crow writing about something that we can all relate to; it’s crucial to speak up on the reality around us. Lana does so rather elegantly, jumping into a melancholic and obscure indie-rock arrangement that perfectly matches her malleable and luscious vocal tone.
Apart from its meaningful songwriting, ‘Orwellian Times’ is also catchy and melodic, with the right balance between gritty guitars and expensive textures, all making for a functional and rewarding listening experience. We particularly love it when Lana Crow indulges in gloomy and epic anthems; those are formulas that fit her vocals very well. That said, the single also comes with a great deal of vibrant energy and sharp guitar solos; George Harris does a brilliant job on production duties.
Delving deeper into the song, Lana Crow explains: “It’s about calling out what we have invited into our lives, all in the name of feeling good about ourselves and keeping the score. We’ve become addicted to outrage, even in the matters that are not ours to judge, and this song is me holding up a mirror: not to condemn, but to make us think.”
