What we appreciate the most in Costa Rican band La Versión Extendida de las Cosas is their ability to continuously weave an emotional push-and-pull, contrasting softer, gentler sections with pungent, solid distortions, yet always maintaining control of the piece, especially from a vocal standpoint. ‘Collie’ is the perfect evidence of that, a wonderfully meaningful single that makes ample use of post-rock and indie tinges, well balanced by a more poignant lyrical message.
Written by guitarist and vocalist Calvo, the song was inspired by a real-life event, describing a poignant storyline from two different perspectives – a human and a dog one. As he explains: “The idea arose from a personal experience that my partner and I lived. During our workdays, a dog began to visit us daily on our apartment patio, always around 4 or 5 in the afternoon. This inspired me to write this song about the importance of those small moments and how, sometimes, in the rush, we can overlook them.”
Marking La Versión Extendida de las Cosas’ first independent production, ‘Collie’ was wholesomely recorded remotely between South America and the US. The result is a piece that blinks an eye to the indie staples we all know, yet infused with heightened eclecticism, a more libertine and authentic vibe. Overall, a fantastic, nuanced record, one that will certainly be worth your time.
