King In Yellow Construct Edgy and Artistic Debut EP ‘Dark passengers’

A fuzzy, raw, and intense four-track offering, ‘Dark passengers’ is the debut EP from New York-based outfit King In Yellow, a band we’ve kept a close eye (and ear) on this year. With a love for acts like Joy Divison, The Smiths, Bauhaus, and The Sisters of Mercy to mention just a few, King In Yellow delve into rich and moody soundscapes of new wave, dark wave, and post-punk.

‘Lucid Dream’ begins proceedings and immediately sucks you in with a washed-out 80s-inspired guitar riff and energetic drum work. Kyle McDonough then makes his vocal introduction – and readies the listener for a heartfelt and passionate display of vulnerability and edge.

The EP’s title track follows ‘Lucid Dream’, and it’s a dark and potent sonic journey that, at times, almost feels a little uncomfortable. This becomes more understandable when Kyle describes the tune as “a meditation on feelings of depression and grief”.

‘Hand In Fan’ has that same dark energy that made ‘Lucid Dream’ such an infectious and immersive offering, before the hard-hitting and gritty sounds of ‘Desire Path’ play us out.

All in all, ‘Dark passengers’ is a highly intriguing and cohesive little EP that gets better and better with each listen.
