It’s been a while since we last featured Katie Belle. Rest assured, she has not been resting on her laurels, instead embracing a highly productive ethos and sharing a plethora of potent, anthemic and evocative pop cuts. It’s only natural for that to happen: Belle is what we would call a natural talent, a gifted songwriter and singer with an incredible pulse for what makes good pop music. ‘Bad Dreams’ is Katie’s latest effort, a charming slice of fast-paced, dancy synth-pop and alluring introspective imagery.
Written about her own struggle with insomnia, ‘Bad Dreams’ takes a deeply personal theme and unfurls it in a series of relatable motifs and catchy choruses, likening insomnia and negative dreams to an obscure, gloomy place; one that Katie Belle would rather not visit. Part reflective and part euphoric, the record does a great job of contrasting such meaningful lyricism with a playfully mainstream musical character, showcasing Belle’s masterful songwriting aura.
Delving deeper into the inspiration behind the song, the Atlanta-based creative explains: “‘Bad Dreams’ is written about my long struggle with insomnia, and how music helps take me out of my own head. The production envelops the lyrics in a way that inspires anyone who listens to want to dance! My intent is for people to lose themselves for a moment when they listen to the song; to step away from, to forget their problems.”
