We were writing about Kat Kikta back in March, celebrating the project as having “expansive, cathartic artistry which appears intricate and liminal, wrapped in mysterious tones and mystical energy”. We stand by our words; the London-based songstress has always been pursuing her own unique take on modern music, carving out a personal, quirky space that feels meaningful and purposeful. Following up from previous effort ‘Cherry Trees’, Kikta has now returned with something a tad more lighthearted, yet still treated to the project’s hazy aural energy.
Drawing from the legendary British group Fine Young Cannibals, Kat delivers an eclectic and reworked version of their hit ‘She Drives Me Crazy’. Shedding any synth-pop ambition, the track features a plethora of haunting, brooding textures, with Kikta’s hypnotic vocals drenched in reverb and an otherworldly flair. The instrumental backdrop features chill-out tones and trip-hop influences, moving at a slow pace and evoking a relaxing atmosphere.
Overall, ‘He Drives Me Crazy’ showcases Kat Kikta’s ability to take an existing piece of music and make it uniquely hers. She’s truly creative. Delving deeper into the record, she explains: “I don’t know anyone who doesn’t really love this song. I’ve made this track because I love the original so much that I had to touch it and play with it and find more ways to fall in love with the song. I wanted to re-frame its surroundings and gift it additional life, in another world.”
