Advancing their glorious journey towards the upcoming album ‘We Are Forever’, Portland-based shoegaze outfit Kallai returns today with what we can certainly describe as their haziest, dreamiest effort so far. ‘Falling’ is exactly that; it still carries the band’s spacious aural signature, yet there’s a plethora of additional reverbs that transform guitars into never-ending drones. It’s a trend that partly already started with previous single ‘The Wave’.
The keen reader might remember our article about it earlier this summer. We had noticed something there: “In a way, ‘The Wave’ feels more polished and less gritty than anything else in Kallai’s past catalogue.” We stand by our words; distancing themselves from alt-rock, the American outfit embraces a sonic ethos that borders dream-pop, in our opinion. ‘Falling’ showcases that perfectly, reaching a musical shape that’s almost perfect. It’s mellow, lush and hypnotic, with soothing, cathartic vocals sharing the attention with otherworldly guitars.
We also appreciate Kallai’s effort not to rest on their laurels, continuously developing the shoegaze references they so much love. It’s a sign of creativity and artistic commitment. Doubling down on the reasoning behind the new single, the group explains: “’Falling’ claws itself into the crux of the moment when you realise you are falling in love with someone; in a state of complete freefall where you would forsake everything and go any distance for that person.”
