It’s been a long time since we wrote about JSDavani. Hailing from the US, the boundary-pushing composer and sonic artist has been developing a highly experimental outlook, exploring leftfield electronica, field recordings, and everything in between. The goal is to strike listeners with unheard aural goodness, and we feel as though he’s now achieved it. ‘Prefix:SELF’ is the perfect evidence of that, a slice of unrepentant and obscure sound design with a meaningful overarching ethos.
As always, JSDavani presents us with a challenge. You see, this is not a record for everyone; this is bold, fearless musical innovation, also rather dark and introspective. Over a whopping twenty tracks, ‘Prefix:SELF’ unpacks the philosophical concept of multiple selves, developing the very same otherworldly and dystopian theme in sonic form. Boasting a decade-long career as a Behaviour Analyst, the American creative possesses all the right qualities to delve deeper into human expression and thought patterns. He does so with authentic allure.
Delving deeper into the record, Davani explains: “This release is full of ‘easter eggs’ that tie together other releases and content. For example, I used many field recordings of music from my other albums and worked them into pretty much all of these tracks.”
