We originally encountered Dutch songstress Josephine Odhil late last year, writing about her intense, leftfield single ‘Ennui’. We proudly defined the record as “one of the best records we have heard lately”, a statement that holds its weight even today. ‘Mazarine Blue’ signals Odhil’s latest piece, a stunningly gentle and elegant jewel that’s equally striking and unique. Leaving behind fast-paced, intricate arrangements, Josephine is now seen embracing a dreamier, hazier take on her kaleidoscopic artistry.
Steeped in soulful ballads, trip-hop eclecticism and buoyant psychedelia, ‘Mazarine Blue’ features a steady, minimal drum groove, a vivid bassline and a plethora of modulating, fuzzy soundscapes. It’s the perfect match for Odhil’s decadent vocal tone, here delivered with lascive charisma and round, slow melodies. The listening experience is positively feverish, wrapping us all into a floating state of mind, one that’s rather healing and introspective. It is pure escapism.
Speaking about the inspiration behind the record, Odhil cites ‘The Collector’ by John Fowles as her primary reference. The project’s latest album, ‘Monstera’, is also out now.
