Steeped in retro-indie goodness, ‘Real Magic’ emerges from the heightened artistry and musical genius of Canadian troubadour Johnny Payne. Formerly known as a member of the esteemed indie ensemble The Shilohs, the B.C.-based producer and songwriter has long committed to a wonderful solo project, an endeavour that took him on a nostalgic journey through rock, Americana and power-pop, always without imposing himself any specific genre restrictions. ‘Real Magic’ is the direct result of such a process, and the first step towards Payne’s upcoming album ‘Dazzle Me’.
Featuring fellow Canadian band Yukon Blonde, ‘Real Magic’ sees Johnny embracing a shockingly groovy and uplifting aural ethos, borrowing greatly from the so-called ‘Heritage Revivalism’ indie rock scene. The listening experience is surprisingly dance-inducing, with hints of disco-funk memories making their way throughout the piece. Payne’s vocals are catchy and heartwarming, this time delivered with quirky and cool allure.
Delving deeper into ‘Real Magic’, Johnny Payne explains: “The song is about observing feelings of magic in your life; music, dancing and romance being key examples for me. Real-life moments that can be so electric that they feel magical. It’s important not to lose touch with that. I wrote the song with Yukon Blonde in mind. They can do this instant disco thing that is as good as anyone these days, and I knew they would knock it out of the park.”
