The keen reader might gladly remember Australian singer-songwriter John Leslie. Writing about ‘Cosmic Echoes’ back in 2022, we celebrated the project as “an artist whose musical output has proven time and time again to be classy, meaningful and of high quality.” We stand by our words: Leslie can be seen as a holistic creative, a talented musician not truly tied to any particular genres, instead navigating the sonic realm with an open mind and a certain flair for experimentation. That’s perhaps how ‘Dream’ was born, John’s latest effort.
Hypnotic and eclectic, the single sees Leslie embracing a curious outlook on classical Indian instrumentation, making for a rather fusion power-pop piece with hints of rock and Indian allure. ‘Dream’ is certainly luscious and evocative, steeped in expansive, dreamy melodies and hazy production. Alongside John Leslie’s heartwarming vocals, we find Brisbane-based sitar virtuoso Sudha Manian and acclaimed Australian drummer Jackie James Barnes, helping the record reach its aural zenith.
Behind such a potent piece, we find a highly inspired lyrical take on Vedic philosophy. As Leslie eloquently explains: “The metaphor of the universe as a dream invites us to reconsider our understanding of reality and existence. It provokes deep philosophical inquiry into the nature of life, consciousness, and the self. By exploring this concept, we aim to uncover the spiritual significance and transformative potential it holds for individuals seeking deeper truths.”
