JJ Sweetheart struck gold, at least from a lo-fi point of view. You see, the Minneapolis-based creative’s latest release flourishes on an expansive, ethereal and nostalgic sonic imprint, one focused on detuned synths, weak drums and chaotic, mysterious vocals, all qualities making for a hypnotic, quirky and authentic slice of musical extravaganza. Sweetheart is pretty adamant about it all: “It was only made with vibes in mind”, he playfully explains.
Mission accomplished: ‘Lavishly’ is as vibey as it could vibe, unveiling a four-minute listening experience that’s hard to resist; an experience drenched in escapism and introspection. This is one of those records where one can abstract to, letting memories, regrets and imaginative thoughts take the lead. That’s exactly what we did, slowly lulled by JJ’s bold, overreaching vocals.
Gearing up for a debut album to be released in the near future, JJ Sweetheart appears fully committed to his creative vision, explaining how he enjoys using a low-cost creative process, letting musical ideas through freely through minimal gear and cheap tools. As he explains: “The vocals were recorded with my phone, and the instruments are run through BandLab, making for a very lo-fi, intimate production value”.
