JimiDek Embraces Lofi House with ‘sunnyday blues’

The keen reader might remember JimiDek from ‘breaktime’, a stunningly fierce and boundary-pushing D&B piece that we proudly declared as “an aural experience that’s both nostalgic and futuristic”. Today, the Nigerian-born, London-based DJ and producer returns with a surprising offering, ‘sunnyday blues’, a lofi house record that’s both hypnotising and hard-hitting. While JimiDek was previously known for his foray into lo-fi territories, the imaginative creative has now taken a credible step into dance music.

It works; ‘sunnyday blues’ draws listeners into an uplifting and playful atmosphere, a place that’s still laced with soulful energy and leftfield flair. The production is nuanced and carefully put together, with a delicate balance of textures and fussy bass lines perfectly framing the processed, otherworldly vocal samples. In true JimiDek fashion, ‘sunnyday blues’ is a record with purpose – there’s a specific ethos behind it.

Specifically, “the bittersweet feeling of a beautiful Sunday evening as Monday’s responsibilities loom on the horizon”, as the young DJ and producer eloquently explains. A “unique emotional space”, the contrast between the “brightness and melancholy” is then adapted into sonic form, with the single charmingly catering to it. An aural chiaroscuro that’s plenty obvious between the euphoric grooves and the gloomier soundscapes.

A trend is starting to emerge here: JimiDek seems to be at his best in fringe territories, constantly threading the fine line between nostalgia and futurism.
