Jill Blutt Returns with Vivid, Nostalgic Piece ‘When I Grace Yr Mantelpiece’

The keen reader might remember American creative Jill Blutt from a feature we did for ‘Salt’ earlier this year. We did speak rather highly of the Brooklyn-based songwriter and producer, proudly declaring the record “catchy and uplifting in its melodies, yet leftfield and fresh in its sonic energy.” On a course to release a long-awaited EP, Blutt returns today with a final single, ‘When I Grace Yr Mantelpiece’. The aural references are a tad different from its predecessor, yet the lyrical theme is still as vivid and meaningful, exploring introspective and existential territories with a certain playfulness, still relatable and engaging.

Once again, we find Jill’s music absolutely irresistible, incredibly fresh and unique, yet also familiar, well-balanced between tradition and futurism. In that regard, ‘When I Grace Yr Mantelpiece’ is quite emotional and expressive, fully delving into an anthemic musical livery that fully showcases Blutt’s vocal prowess. There’s a whiff of 80s-esque new wave and pop here, yet it’s all scrambled into something that’s ever-relevant and striking.

Speaking about the inspiration behind the song, Blutt explains: “An existential plea whose message is unapologetically unsubtle: ‘please, please make me famous or I might, quite possibly, die’”.
