Taken at face value, ‘Shame’ is bound to drive a fierce, empowering personal experience, a haunting, fearless slice of lyrical charisma and wholesome Folk/Americana goodness. In truth, there’s a certain eclecticism behind it, as much as in the song’s talented author, Jess Corbin. A gifted singer, songwriter and musician, Corbin enjoys a rather wide-ranging artistry, championing an authentic and honest creative ethos that often results in observant, meaningful pieces of aural goodness.
‘Shame’ is the perfect example of that. Built on a nostalgic and eclectic instrumental, the track flourishes on shimmering guitars and a quirky mandolin, supercharging the sense of urgency already present in Corbin’s own songwriting. Jesse’s malleable, potent and relatable vocals resonate like a timeless warning, a call to arms for anyone feeling stepped on and overlooked.
As Corbin eloquently explains: “At first, I was inspired to write this after the Supreme Court’s overturning of Roe v. Wade, so I was writing from the perspective of a woman and the idea of losing women’s rights to govern their own healthcare. I have since come to realise that the ideas put forth in the song actually apply to any group that is marginalised and/or in danger of losing rights that had previously been granted through the constitution.”
