The keen reader will gladly remember London-based creative jem wax. Featuring ‘SPIDERRR’ earlier this year, we celebrated it as “an antidote to the modern obsession with uniformity, instead taking an oblique, effective approach to authenticity”. We stand by our words: jem wax’s artistic galaxy is unique and highly hypnotic, all qualities that make her a standout in the contemporary pop landscape. In truth, her genre-based references are wider, with follow-up ‘Annual Leave’ offering a great deal of neo-soul and R&B goodness.
More recently, jem wax has unveiled her latest effort, ‘In My Corner’. Doubling down on the soulful approach, the track appears to develop a theme, raising the heat and the hype around the project’s upcoming EP, ‘Annual Leave’. From a sonic standpoint, we are in uplifting, sultry and lush territories. ‘In My Corner’ is also something that aids a certain rhythmic flair, if you will (aka you could dance to it).
Lyrically, the single is rather vulnerable and honest, exposing the ever-lasting conflict between head and heart in romantic affairs. As jem wax explains: “It captures the quiet tug-of-war between heart and head, searching for a genuine connection whilst wrestling with the doubts left behind by past experiences. Embracing a love that feels exciting, romantic, whilst grounded and safe.”
