James Percival Deals with Personal Trauma in ‘Curtains Closed’ EP

Nothing about ‘Curtains Closed’ is standard. Both meaningful and aleatory, the EP was born out of James Percival’s deep reflections and personal trauma, especially regarding a loved family member. Dealing with a tragic illness affecting his sister, the Birmingham-based musician and creative initiates an artistic journey that’s incredibly sui generis and unique. He doesn’t refer to a particular reference of style, instead crafting a melting pot of virtuosity and quirkiness that will surprise even the most expert listeners.

The vibe and the mood vary greatly throughout ‘Curtains Closed’, but the general impression is a constant tension between poignancy and rage. Evocative, emotional pieces such as the opening title track stand tall alongside Jazz and fusion pieces such as ‘Disembodied’ and ‘Insane’. The listeners are here witnessing Percival’s internal trauma in real-time, as he deals with darkness and hope in a crude, striking way.

‘What am I supposed to feel?’ provides a healthy ambient-esque respite from the pungent instrumental euphoria so common in the record. The range of emotions conveyed is rather impressive, showcasing James’ maturity and expertise as a composer and musician. As he explains: “It is a purging outpouring that he hopes will provide a space to cry, grieve, get angry, express the deepest longings, and ultimately heal for anyone going through a similar situation with a loved one.”
