It’s been a pivotal year for J. Killen. Stepping back into the music industry after a long hiatus, the American musician and songwriter has so far released three singles and an album, with one more LP on its way. There’s a distinct reason he’s able to produce so much material in a relatively short time; simply, he’s had a lifetime of inspiration, a highly poignant and dramatic human experience that now serves as the backbone behind his lyricism. ‘Oak Tree’ marks his latest single.
We are positively surprised by how good ‘Oak Tree’ appears to be, a sign that there has always been real, genuine talent behind J. Killen’s artistic journey. Even though he had to retire from the music industry for a while due to personal issues, his musicianship is still very much alive, here crowning a wonderful Americana piece. The malleable steel guitar is the cherry on the cake, perfectly complementing Killen’s evocative vocals.
Delving deeper into the introspective lyrical ethos that propels his music, Killen explains: “I have this idea of legacy. I don’t have a wife or kids, so I want to put out as many records as I can before I leave this world. This is a record of love, loss, and depression. I came to a point where I needed music to process some emotions. It’s not the most fun of topics, but there is hope woven in. I really cracked the door with how I feel on this one.” Such meaningful theming will be fully unveiled in J’s upcoming album, ‘Depression Dollars’.
