We got to know Ivelisse del Carmen back in February, writing about a wonderfully meaningful and nuanced effort, ‘Las Mariposas’. Sung in Spanish, the record first introduced us to the melody-rich, elegant artistic universe of the London-based songstress. Recently, Ivelisse has returned with a new record, a charming, bright pop piece that seems to flip the script; leaving poignancy behind, ‘An Ocean in Between’ feels more energetic and uplifting, yet still drenched in IDC’s understated class and lusciousness.
Performed in English, ‘An Ocean in Between’ oscillates between carefree joy and heightened emotional charge, exploring the “buoyant, breathless moments before a reunion — when possibility is everything and love feels like a game you’re daring enough to play”, as Ivelisse del Carmen eloquently explains. After all, isn’t romance just a series of fleeting moments that feel timeless and powerful? The talented creative appears to pinch and hold one of those moments, celebrating the trepidation and excitement stemming from passion and attraction.
Produced by frequent collaborator Paul Stanborough, ‘An Ocean in Between’ develops with grace and hidden minimalism, letting IDC’s hypnotising, dynamic vocals crown the record. The release also comes with a stunning music video directed by Lee Thomas, and featuring Chloe Saracco and Luke Bodnar. Scripted by Ivelisse herself, the visual depicts moments of heartwarming romance in picturesque London settings.
