Ivan Moult Returns with Nuanced, Introspective Album ‘Stood Out In The Storm’

‘Stood Out In The Storm’ marks our point of entry into Ivan Moult’s nuanced, evocative artistic universe. Of course, we are perhaps late to the party: championed by prestigious tastemakers, the likes of Huw Stephens across BBC Radio 6 Music and BBC Radio Wales, the Cardiff-based singer-songwriter has previously left a mark on the British music scene with his previous album ‘Songs From Severn Grove’ (2023). The project holds quite a luscious and intimate allure, with tender and introspective folk goodness interlaced with the occasional blues and soul influence.

Whichever way you look at it, Ivan Moult’s musical work is all at the service of his own lyricism, letting jagged, smoky vocals float freely on a bed of gentle textures and nostalgic instruments. ‘Stood Out In The Storm’ is the perfect example of that. Out now via ‘Bubblewrap Collective’, the album features eight timeless pieces with heightened lyrical intensity, all sharing a certain nocturnal flair, delivered with keen restraint and playful flair by the Welsh artist.

Delving deeper behind the album, Mount explains: “Written in the aftermath of personal upheaval, ‘Stood Out In The Storm’ traces a journey through darkness and recovery, exploring fragility, resilience and hope.” Overall, this is a record that deserves your attention and focus. It’s not made for fast consumption. Rather, it’s been crafted for slow, reflective evening listening sessions.
