It’s been a busy but rewarding year for Ian Roland. In fact, we featured him earlier in February with ‘Virtually Free’, kickstarting a release schedule that would also see ‘The Real Thing’ and ‘Boxing Gloves’ make their way into the world. Today, we are pleased to announce that ‘Entangled Lives’ is also out, Roland’s latest effort and a striking showcase of a project that gets better with each record.
‘Entangled Lives’ particularly flourishes thanks to Roland’s bold and imaginative storytelling, transforming what might seem like a delightful pop-folk gem into a comprehensive set of nuanced imagery. Inspired by Merlin Sheldrake’s Entangled Life, a book about how the natural world is all secretly connected, Ian envisions a particular storyline that involves an astronaut travelling deep into space, then beginning to feel alienated from what he has left behind. Yet, this is still not where we find the song’s true message.
Delving deeper into the complexity of his lyricism, Roland explains: “Ultimately, ‘Entangled Lives’ isn’t really a song about astronauts or space exploration. Space simply provides the perspective. It is a song about what we discover about ourselves when we become separated from the people, places and natural environment we are connected to — and how, however far we travel, those connections remain.” We appreciate such a meaningful outlook; it’s the perfect choice for a record that feels welcoming and nostalgic on the surface, but that hides more intricate and expansive songwriting.
