Hoxsey Shares Gloomy, Cryptic Album ‘Harvest Moon Sessions’

Titled ‘Harvest Moon Sessions’, the album is pretty self-explanatory, a nighttime musical ritual drenched in mysterious tones and vaporous songwriting.

Readers may be looking for a fitting soundtrack to Halloween. Hoxsey has an answer to that, a candidate that will deliver the right amount of gloominess to your October-end shenanigans. Titled ‘Harvest Moon Sessions’, the album is pretty self-explanatory, a nighttime musical ritual drenched in mysterious tones and vaporous songwriting. Interestingly, the record was captured on a Tascam 4-track machine, a feature that’s rather crucial to the final result.

Featuring thirteen tracks, ‘Harvest Moon Sessions’ rejoices into a lo-fi, grimy sonic theme, with an eclectic imprint that often draws from guitars, keys, and even acoustic moments. In fact, alongside bold and loud offerings such as ‘The Rise’ and ‘Sacrifice Table’, we find a few acoustic pieces that benefit from a stripped-back livery. Yet, they still feel quite solid and hazy, in what we suspect to be a byproduct of the vintage recording process.

Delving deeper into the creative ethos that propels the album, Hoxsey explains: “Those are songs built around atmosphere, storytelling, folklore, strange characters, change, mortality, and the feeling of early fall. Rather than a traditional Halloween record, it feels like a soundtrack for the changing season, dark, reflective, sometimes eerie, and occasionally playful.” We love such imagery; crepuscular, intimate, and quite melancholic. It’s certainly unique, from an aural and lyrical standpoint.
