Shifting into a more mainstream gear and seeking to entice a wider audience, Australian rock outfit Highroad No. 28 has recently unveiled their latest effort, an electrifying and melodic piece packed with expressive tones and charming vocals. What more could you wish for? Facilitated by The Orchard (Sony Music), ‘Ache’ sees the Melbourne-based band embracing a new era of musical exploration, initiating a journey that will culminate with the forthcoming album ‘The Will to Endure’.
As promised, ‘Ache’ would like to capture the attention of a bigger audience. To do so, Highroad No. 28 well-balances pop-leaning hooks and keys with gritty distortion and rolling drums. In particular, the contrast between the group’s hard-hitting guitar riffs and the lighter keyboard motifs is rather striking, a constant push-and-pull that supercharges the evocative lyricism and melodic vocals behind the song. ‘Ache’ also cuts a working compromise between tradition and modernity, with the Aussie group taking a cue from late ’80s and early ’90s pop-rock, yet never sounding in any way retro.
Delving deeper into the record, Highroad No. 28 explains: “Ache is about emotional honesty, the pain that stays from lost love and passion, but also the strange beauty in still feeling something real.” Overall, ‘Ache’ doesn’t reinvent the wheel, but provides a well-crafted, evocative musical journey that’s still packed with fierceness and energy.
