Highlands Unveil Wholesome Single ‘As If A Kiss’

Ahead of a forthcoming EP, British duo Highlands have unveiled ‘As If A Kiss’, a slice of meaningful and heartwarming folk pop.

Describing themselves as “a partnership born from long walks in the park and late-night FaceTime calls”, Highlands have certainly clear ideas about the kind of wholesome, relatable artistry that their project is built upon. Hailing from England, the talented duo has recently unveiled their latest single, ‘As If A Kiss’, their first release of the year and a preamble to a forthcoming EP, ‘City Gets Lonely’. Steeped in heartwarming folk-leaning pop and nostalgic arrangement, the single is truly quite rounded and organic, something that likely stems from the record’s real instruments and the elegant, catchy melodies that surround it.

From a genre standpoint, we are in Folk territories indeed, yet there’s also a certain eclecticism in it, with an uplifting pop chorus that’s bound to appeal to a wide audience. Overall, we have no notes about ‘As If A Kiss’. The listening experience is introspective and meaningful, but also evocative and vibrant. Honestly, the song speaks volumes about the sort of artistry and talent enjoyed by Sam and Gabrielle, the humans behind the project.

Delving deeper into the song, Highlands explain: “Standing in the street-lit road at the end of a Sunday night. Your bags are packed and in the car, but you’re longing for goodbye in a final attempt to delay the inevitable. Stepping slowly towards the car, you wait to be called back to stay.” Inspired by long-distance romance and the longing for something more, ‘As If A Kiss’ feels honest and authentic.
