Happy People Unveil Wholesome Comeback Album ‘internet songs’

We have enjoyed listening to ‘internet songs’. We’d go as far as to say that the album is as lush as its cassette release, a charmingly colourful package out now via Lunchbox Records. In fact, there’s a hazy allure, a dreamy, utopian sonic character that permeates the whole record. Perhaps it wasn’t intentional, as ‘internet songs’ takes pride in meaningful, relatable and honest lyricism. Yet, from a listener’s standpoint, there’s something feverishly dreamy about it, certainly due to the album’s eclectic and partly genre-less direction.

Drawing inspiration from down-to-earth indie pop as much as they do from leftfield electronica and indie-folk cuts, Happy People writes a body of work that’s incredibly authentic and unique. From the elegant, classy opener ‘oh so thin’ to the nocturne, soothing gem ‘caffeine’, the sixteen pieces in ‘internet songs’ unfold an aural landscape that’s incredibly detailed and nuanced, but never too complex. Written across several years, the record follows up from the group’s 2020 EP ‘Cassini, I’ve Been So Lonely’.

Motivated by a failed major label deal, the two creatives behind Happy People found solace in creating music independently, without any type of pressure or outside influences. Delving deeper into their lyricism, the Leeds-based duo explains: “The songs reflect on themes of anxiety, mental health, and navigating modern life, often mixing playful sounds with more reflective lyrics.”
