When it comes to Hana Piranha’s face-melting, hard-hitting music, all bets are off. Championing a decadent, pompous aesthetic that’s partly horror-inspired and partly fallen angel-esque, the project is able to serve limitless alt-rock fierceness with a heightened sultry and emo component. It’s not our first rodeo with Hana Piranha, in fact: writing about her 2023 album ‘Wingspan’, we proudly declared it “a stunning album that works wonders in amplifying Piranha’s genre boundaries and charismatic flair.”
The project’s latest effort coincidentally takes a cue from that very same record, giving track number 7 – ‘Elixir of Life’ – a new lease of life, in the form of a gloomy, striking and twisted music video. Mirroring the piece’s lyrical richness and paying tribute to Oscar Wilde’s ‘A Picture of Dorian Gray’, the talented songstress is seen dominating a series of dark-lit choreographies and wearing uncanny skin-based special effects. It all helps to remind us of the rock prowess behind Piranha’s unconventional artistry.
Moving from New Zealand to the UK at the age of twelve to pursue violin, Hana then wanted to experiment with life at a wider level. ‘Elixir of Life’ is the latest attempt at that. As she explains: “The mind-bending music video cranks up the horror, featuring a possessed ballet performance while the band morphs from pristine portraits into nightmare fuel. It’s beautiful, it’s terrifying”.
