Golem Dance Cult Returns with Haunting Piece ‘Call of the Wendigo’

It’s been a while since we heard from Golem Dance Cult. We last wrote about the Australia-based outfit in June 2024, celebrating ‘Feels Like Tuesday (Deja Vu)’ as a “hypnotic and immersive sonic experience”, one tinted in brooding and haunting tones. We stand by our words; the project is rather mysterious and eerie, touching spiritual themes with a dark character. It’s not scary darkness, it’s intense darkness, the kind of lyrical aura that keeps listeners on their toes for an entire three-minute window.

‘Call of the Wendigo’ is the perfect evidence of that. Taken from Golem Dance Cult’s recently released album ‘Shamani Faultlines’, the record feels hypnotising and gloomy, drenched in nostalgic rock tones and otherworldly vocals. Despite that, this is a piece that’s not overly distorted and hard-hitting. On the contrary, Golem Dance Cult seems to play with space and atmospheres, giving the overall record a shadowy, enigmatic identity.

‘Call of the Wendigo’ comes with an equally memorable music video, a series of visuals that fit the project very well. That’s where listeners can pick up on Golem Dance Cult’s entire aesthetic. Speaking about the wider album, the Australian creatives explain: “Mixing cinematic, occult and spiritual atmospheres/references, somewhere between Jane’s Addiction and Bauhaus…” There’s a lot of good in ‘Shamani Faultlines’, and you should check that out too.
