It took us a while to soak up all the eclectic sonic character contained in ‘all the feelings’. A striking, boundary-pushing slice of club-oriented pop, the EP does a good job of blending catchy, evocative melodies with jungle and drum&bass influences, even briefly stopping into EDM territories. Behind such a varied record, we find the genius figure of Stockholm-based Fredrika Rei. A talented producer and songwriter, Rei is carving out an artistic path that’s uniquely hers, a path that doesn’t follow established trends or formulas.
‘all the feelings’ confirms it; the EP doesn’t hold a precise identity, instead constantly adapting to wherever Fredrika wishes to land. ‘Just love (welcome)’ opens the record with intimate and melancholic electro-pop atmospheres, only to then scramble the sonic picture in favour of the organic jungle beats in ‘Slayer’. ‘Giulietta’ embraces gloomy atmospheres and decadent vocals, with a house-flavoured production courtesy of fellow creative DJ GRĒTA.
‘Vill du säga nåt’ and ‘lose my cool’ take the record to a close in intense, dance-oriented fashion and a touch of haunting, cinematic sound design. Delving deeper into the EP’s lyricism, Rei explains: “It dives headfirst into the messy, intense, whirlwind of infatuation, jealousy, betrayal, and self-perception, with lyrics and production that comfort, confront, and stir things up.” Overall, this is an impressive offering from Fredrika, and we suspect there’s a lot more to come.
