For the uninitiated, it would be good to contextualise the circumstances around Formoe’s return. Last seen last year with ‘Fugio’, the Norwegian songwriter and composer has now returned with an extended version of ‘Always’, a track originally released in 2023. Featuring vocals by June Baltzersen and production by Alf Emil Eik (A-ha, Secret Garden), ‘Always’ is now given a longer and more cinematic sonic livery, called ‘the album version’.
That’s your first clue; Formoe is preparing his debut album, set to be released later this year. A deeply introspective and personal work, the record sees the Nordic artist doubling down on his signature blend of nostalgic synth-pop and anthemic AOR character, a formula that makes for epic, melancholic tracks with a high degree of evocative energy. Alongside the extended version, ‘Always’ also comes with a couple of instrumental versions.
Delving deeper into the inspiration behind the upcoming album, Formoe explains: “It explores various phases and emotional experiences of life, weaving together stories of hope, heartbreak, transformation, and reflection”. It’s shaping up to be an instant classic, both for his inspired, timeless production and its honest, authentic songwriting; a refreshing quality in our chaotic, AI-driven times.
