The keen reader will likely be familiar with Pennsylvanian outfit Flavor Wave. Having appeared on our blog a couple of times already, the talented American group is on an album release mission, unveiling single after single before their sophomore LP drops later this year. Known for their eclectic sonic imprint, Flavor Wave enjoy being aural shapeshifters, with their latest effort ‘Sad Songs on the Radio’ taking up a psych-lenient, hazy character that’s very contemporary and hypnotising.
Compared with the group’s previous single, ‘The Optimist’, the waters are muddier and more complex. Featuring a cleaner, gentler sound, the piece was celebrated by Mesmerised as “transforming what appears like a playful indie bit into a nuanced, elegant metaphor for the unpredictability of human existence.” On that note, credit must be given to Flavor Wave’s collective songwriting, always keen towards exploring the highs and lows of the human experience.
‘Sad Songs on the Radio’ is a perfect match for such a meaningful ethos, with the song describing an introspective car journey where a couple slowly analyse and unravel their relationship. As lead singer Josh Speaker explains: “This song tells a story of uneasiness or tension between lovers. You never quite know where you’re going to be when an argument breaks out, but I’ve found they tend to happen a lot in cars… Just two people in an enclosed space hashing it out, until it goes too far and someone is left listening to the ironic sad music on the radio while the other is walking down the side of the road.”
