As debut efforts go, ‘Forgetful’ is a deeply convincing offering. Part dreamy and part slick, the single can be seen as a slow-burn, evocative indie anthem, a slice of honest and vulnerable songwriting wrapped in bubbly, modern indie-pop. Luscious guitar tones, measured drum grooves and a rich tapestry of synths give the record its recognisable character, introducing Fir the Band to the wider public. Hailing from Edinburgh, the talented group is the latest young band to grace the national spotlight.
Performed by Sam Maciver (vocals), Euan Clark (guitar/production), and Finlay Smith (drums/production), ‘Forgetful’ is being released with an equally expressive B-side, ‘Bologna’. A more alternative and minimal take on the trio’s ever-evolving sound, the track gives us the impression that the British outfit will evolve positively over the next few releases. Time will tell, although ‘Forgetful’ is already a sizeable offering.
Speaking about the inspiration behind the song, Fir the Band explain: “‘Forgetful’ came from a time when I was constantly being called out for how scattered and distracted I could be, especially by my mum. Around the same time, I met my girlfriend and started unpicking old habits while forming new ones. The song became a reflection of that mental chaos—a loop of memory slips, emotional distraction, and the quiet process of learning how to let someone in while still figuring yourself out.”
