ferb are adamant about describing themselves as “four school friends-turned-brothers”. This sort of stuck with us, because frankly one can hear their alchemy and connection just by listening to their music. ‘Lifted’ is the perfect example of that, a solid, electrifying piece that weaves the fine line between evocative, nostalgic riffing and gloomy, heavy distortions. ferb are really good musicians, better than your average local band. Despite being based in Kingston-upon-Thames, it’s fair to say that their reach deserves to be national. And it will likely be soon.
Perhaps the synergy enjoyed by the group is given by the longstanding friendship between the band’s members. Originally meeting during secondary school, frontman Harley McKinley, bassist Thomas Tye, lead guitarist Ross Blendell, and drummer Joel Boniface have since evolved into a cohesive, hard-hitting musical wonder. Countless hours spent in rehearsal rooms are now bearing fruit, with the project’s collective songwriting allure in full display.
Delving deeper into the creative ethos that propels the new single, McKinley explains: “‘Lifted’ was born from a riff written not long after a gig I attended at the Elephant’s Head in September last year that seemingly changed the trajectory of my life. It sparked a wave of positive emotion that effortlessly poured itself into the song when writing, and the rest of the band felt it too, so it all fell into place very rapidly when we first tracked it a few months later.”
