Steeped in dream-pop euphoria, ‘patrick’ is a curious offering. Both punchy and luscious, the single does a good job of uniting fast-paced, post-punk drum grooves with lighter and elegant guitar distortions, all drenched in shoegaze-esque space and effects. There’s also a strong lo-fi ethos in it, a grainy sonic texture that makes even more sense when compared to the music video for ‘patrick’. Standing tall between nostalgia and futurism, the record is an absolute winner, perhaps a tad niche, yet also relatable and instantly approachable.
drifting. is the talented human behind it. Going by the name John Drifter by day, he lives a nomadic lifestyle committed to music making. He’s been based in Dublin since 2019, slowly perfecting his ‘tape-driven’ character. Speaking about the inspiration behind the song and the video, drifting. explains: “Crafted in the intimate setting of a bedroom above Dublin’s iconic Olympia Theatre, the song intertwines dreamy, guitar-driven melodies with cool, direct vocals. The accompanying VHS-filmed music video, inspired by a late night in Dublin’s queer-rock scene, brings a retro, artsy aesthetic that perfectly complements the track’s nostalgic vibe.”
