The keen reader might remember Ethan Gold by a feature we published in March 2025, praising ‘Mirror Don’t Have Any Feelings’ as “a meaningful and expressive slice of indie-pop and alt-folk goodness.” Since then, the San Francisco-based troubadour has been releasing some more material, including his latest one, ‘When The Evening Comes’, seeing the light of day just over a week ago. In it, we find all of the musical elegance and fervour that Gold has to offer.
Introduced by an anthemic motif sung by female vocals, ‘When The Evening Comes’ subsequently welcomes Ethan’s crepuscular, dynamic vocals, here engaging in a kinetic, indie-powered journey that feels electrifying and positive, even playful at times. In fact, such a feeling is also aided by the single’s lyrical matter, here focused on a simple and heartwarming nostalgic tale of love and distance. In that sense, the piece also serves as an ode to simpler, more comfortable times, in striking contrast to our complex reality.
Delving deeper into the introspective and personal songwriting ethos that propels the record, Gold explains: “It was inspired by my grandfather’s relationship with my grandmother. This is a song for Friday, the end of work, the men riding home on trains to their beloveds, where the magic happens after night falls. A celebration of monogamy in a world gone mad. A dialogue between a man and a woman.”
