We appreciate the rowdy, raw and earthy character exhibited by Chris Thomas & The Merrymakers. The one-man band project is not for the faint of heart. There’s no polishing action here, no fancy production and absolutely no electronic bits. It is simple, no-frills, striking rock & roll goodness, delivered with charisma and confidence by the West Palm Beach-based musician. ‘The Sun & Moon’ is a pretty fitting example of that.
The project’s latest effort, the single is as rebellious and nasty as it could be, a slice of unpretentious and lo-fi guitar bonanza delivered by Thomas’s casual, punchy vocal tone. Namely inspired by the likes of Silversun Pickups, Nirvana and Cage the Elephant, ‘The Sun & Moon’ hits the listeners thick and fast, wrapping them into organised chaos, laidback distortion that hits like a bag of bricks.
It takes guts and courage to fully stick to a precise artistic vision. Chris Thomas & The Merrymakers does exactly that, pursuing his pure, unfiltered artistry and disregarding written rules and proven formulas. Speaking about the record, the American musician explains: “Finally, I am getting back to adding a full ‘rock band’ sound by using bass, electric and acoustic guitars, and midi drum pad drums doubled up for a fuller sound.”
