‘Mess In Your Eyes // Vultures’ is a truly hypnotic effort, a slice of soothing kindness and gentle vocals in an otherwise gloomy, dark reality. Partly, that’s how we imagine Aussie songstress Ella Ion. Emerging from the ocean in a bright silver aura, offering hazy, luscious vocals to anyone in need of some escapism and introspection. In reality, it’s not all such a fever dream, with Ion drawing equally from alt-pop and folk territories. Despite the record’s aural richness, there’s a certain minimalism in it too.
A double single, ‘Mess In Your Eyes // Vultures’ showcases the nuanced artistry behind Ella Ion’s creative charge. If the former is rather understated and poised, the latter picks up a more vibrant character, and overall, the two tracks balance each other well. We are impressed by Ion, aren’t you? Lucky for us, she’s coming over to the UK in August for a couple of headline shows in London and Glasgow and an appearance at Green Man Festival (more details below).
Delving deeper into ‘Mess In Your Eyes // Vultures’, she explains: “While the sentiments behind Mess in Your Eyes and Vultures weigh a little heavy, these songs are possibly the most bright my music has ever sounded and have a lot of fun and euphoric elements sonically. With that in mind, I hope the listener is able to connect with the words while holding their emotion with some lightness.”
