Folks might remember Elise Trouw as an internet sensation, a viral loop-enthusiast, multi-instrumentalist, and visual artist hypnotising audiences worldwide. Boasting the highest form of musicianship, Elise is the kind of artist that particularly resonates with fellow musicians and music nerds, although it’s fair to say that her reach has now flooded popular culture as well. Anyway, take everything you know about the American artist and throw it out of the window, as Trouw embarks on the next phase of her burgeoning career.
We have already praised ‘All You Need is Lust’ earlier this year, celebrating it as “steeped in an uplifting and eclectic pop livery”. Well, Trouw’s latest effort, ‘The Perfect Girl’, shifts the sonic picture in favour of soul-flavoured territories and a lighter arrangement, still with a modern, electro-spark in it. Elise’s alter-ego, Elon Lust, is still in charge of proceedings.
‘The Perfect Girl’ draws from a memory that’s stuck with Elise since middle school: the day a group of boys made a ‘hot or not’ list ranking all the girls in class. The song is absurdly upbeat, but the subtext is darker. “It was one of the first moments I realised how girls were being seen,” she says. “It wasn’t much about who we were. It was about how we looked. That never really left me.”
