Eleanor Murray Reclaims Her Artistry in Personal, DIY Album ‘PLAY LOVE’

Broadly defined as an indie-pop album, ‘PLAY LOVE’ cannot be contained in a box; it’s a malleable, ever-changing work of love, the result of Murray’s unapologetic commitment to songwriting and music-making.

We are rather impressed with Eleanor Murray’s latest album, ‘PLAY LOVE’. Hailing from Seattle, the American songstress has recently returned with one of her most personal records to date, an eclectic, non-conforming sonic journey that toys with melancholy as much as it does with euphoria. Broadly defined as an indie-pop album, ‘PLAY LOVE’ cannot be contained into a box; it’s a malleable, ever-changing work of love, the result of Murray’s unapologetic commitment to songwriting and music-making.

Introduced by ‘Just Like This’, Eleanor’s LP instantly appears as a heartwarming, raw acoustic mirage, here guided by her celestial and nuanced vocal tone. Yet, ‘Idle Time’ quickly shifts the mood into more contemporary, bare-bones settings, with a simple drum machine groove acting as a kinetic matrix for Murray’s introspective storytelling. Next, ‘Opposite’ embraces more uplifting and retro synth-pop character, once again reiterating the unpredictability of such a diverse project.

Beyond its hypnotic and minimalist aural character, ‘PLAY LOVE’ hides a deeply authentic and meaningful lyrical core. The album serves as an empowering act for Murray, as she reclaims her creative process and finds an artist formula that’s cohesive, personal and strikingly evocative. Asd we are told, “the record centres on themes of young, girlish love, not as innocence, but as power. The DIY production is intentional: a reclamation of space, authorship, and sound. This is female-empowered pop where Murray has shaped every beat, harmony, and texture herself.”
