Edoardo Gastaldi and Matthew Mayer Team Up on Cathartic Wonder ‘The Four Acts’

‘The Four Acts’ flourishes over compositional restraint and purposeful minimalism, with Mayer and Gastaldi filling the blanks between sparse piano arpeggios, evocative chords, and cinematic soundscapes.

A familiar face on our blog, award-nominated film composer Edoardo Gastaldi has recently unveiled a stunning ambient wonder, ‘The Four Acts’. On this occasion, the Venice-based creative has teamed up with pianist Matthew Mayer for an EP that blurs the line between ambient and neo-classical, aiding a calm, restrained mood and a heightened introspective allure. Gastaldi and Mayer met by chance during a concert, instantly recognising their shared artistic vision and the potential of a collaboration.

From a sonic standpoint, the EP flourishes over compositional restraint and purposeful minimalism, with Mayer and Gastaldi filling the blanks between sparse piano arpeggios, evocative chords, and cinematic soundscapes. The listening experience is tender and cathartic, but also packed with gravitas and emotional resolve. We wouldn’t expect anything less from ‘The Four Acts’, also showcasing Edoardo’s nuanced mixing and production skills.

Delving deeper into the meaningful ethos that propels the record, Gastaldi explains: “We created this EP to remind each other how life can be uneven, filled with hardships beneath the surface. Yet, in the midst of impermanence and struggles, something can still break forth: music.” The EP does carry a strong hypnotic ethos, going beyond the sole purpose of an ambient body of work; it’s a stream of escapism and heartwarming comfort.
