Easton Returns with Crooner-style Jewel ‘Can’t Help But Check My Phone’

Upon hearing ‘Can’t Help But Check My Phone’, we were positively surprised. You see, there’s a strong crooning quality in Easton’s vocals. His tone is so delicate, luscious and passionate, exuding charm and a certain nostalgia. We find a strong retro quality in it, echoed also by the vocal recording itself, quite textured and with a vintage flair. Contrasting with that, we then get served a lo-fi, modern instrumental. Bucolic and ethereal, it really helps in placing the song in contemporary settings, while blinking an eye to more elegant, decade-old material.

The keel listener will find a certain Elvis Presley similarity in the ‘Can’t Help But Check My Phone’, as the title of the song also suggests. Its lyricism is impressively bright and witty, metaphorically using smartphones as the modern idea of love and longing – the one thing we can’t be separated from. It all works very well, showcasing Easton’s sapient songwriting skills and inspired artistry.

Emerging from Los Angeles, the talented newcomer is not only a musician, but also a wider creative, flourishing as a fashion photographer. Boasting terrific streaming numbers, it appears as though Easton is destined to leave a lasting impact on the music industry. We’ll be here supporting him, as we are confident many others will.
