It took us a while to find the right words to describe the grief-stricken and meaningful premise behind ‘Dipped in Black’. In fact, we are still not sure we found them. Yet, DomLand’s story needs to be shared and narrated, as it will no doubt inspire many listeners around the world. Returning to the music landscape after a three-year hiatus, the Canadian songstress seeks to slowly come to terms with the tragic loss of her partner, at a time when she was also pregnant. Such a poignant and painful experience serves as a heartfelt creative well, eventually leading to ‘Dipped in Black’.
A three-track EP, the record sees DomLand embracing her neo-soul roots with elegant eclecticism. ‘No Distance’ introduces us to what’s about to be a cathartic, emotional lyrical journey. Slow-paced, ballad-driven soul goodness particularly highlights the Ottawa-based talent’s nuanced vocals: round and luscious, DomLand captures the listener’s attention almost instantly. ‘Written in Stars’ enjoys a darker, more brooding outlook, with a beat-less arrangement aiding a sacred cinematic allure.
‘Legacy’ takes the record to a close with modern neo-soul sheen. Overall, ‘Dipped in Black’ blooms into sombre introspection and poignant nostalgia, a listening experience that’s ever hard-hitting and memorable. Delving deeper into the cathartic nature of the record, DomLand explains: “This project honours my late partner, Dip Black, who passed away while I was pregnant with our son. Though the journey has been painful, creating this music became a therapeutic way to process grief and transform it into something lasting.”
