Dogmile Returns with Wholesome EP ‘Static Retracted’

There’s a powerful quote from that has stuck with us: “The idea behind it was to cut through the noise and pull back any external static where possible, all in search of greater clarity, but going through the muck to get there”. We like to think such an authentic ethos applies to both the project’s aural charge and its heightened lyricism. You see, from a sonic standpoint, what Dogmile says makes a lot of sense. Pulling away from modern polish and outside influence, the American creative returns to wholesome instrumentation and raw, immediate arrangements.

This makes ‘Static Retracted’ quite an urgent and intense EP, yet never too obvious. Described by ourselves as “a supercharged fever dream, a slice of escapism and hidden psychedelia” in a previous feature, Dogmile does bathe in musical nostalgia and gritty energy, doing so with charisma and quirky technical prowess. Recording all of the instruments by himself, the American musician captured all parts on a cassette, a medium that certainly gives the EP a grainy, partly lo-fi allure.

What’s not to like about it? It also gives it a particular cohesion that’s hard to describe, a striking compression that reeks of analogue fervour. Delving deeper into the record, Dogmile explains: “I see the project as an endeavour that is down to Earth yet also alien. My work has received support from the likes of Henry Rollins, Rough Trade, and Bank Robber music, among others.”
