Discover SYOT’s Genre-Bending Aural Universe in ‘X’

‘X’ marks our point of entry into South Korean outfit SYOT’s peculiar artistic universe. It’s a deeply eclectic musical space, a timeless blend of traditional Korean allure and Western influences. Marking the Seoul-based trio’s latest double single, ‘X’ features ‘Hassla’ and ‘Velvet’, two diverse and vibrant pieces that operate at opposite ends, yet both serve a common purpose. You see, ‘Hassla’ threads the fine line between instrumental electronica and fusion with heightened elegance, while Velvet finds a worthy refuge in classic Jazz territories. Both tracks feature the gayageum, a traditional Korean string instrument, here performed by Yoolim Lee.

Producer and multi-instrumentalist G.QOO and pianist and singer Hanbeen Park complete the talented lineup, showcasing how personnel from different musical backgrounds can often come together and push each other’s boundaries. SYOT is more than the sum of three creatively gifted individuals; it’s a project that pushes boundaries and finds an innovative path forward between tradition and futurism.

Delving deeper into the record, SYOT explains: “We hope listeners feel a sense of harmony and coexistence. Korean culture embraces a wide range of traditional styles and genres, yet what we think connects them all is the aesthetic of balance. Like the Korean consonant ‘ㅅ,’ where three lines converge at one point, our music aims to embody that same moment of convergence.”
