There’s no shortage of visionaries, or music voyagers, as we like to call them. Devin James Fry is one of them, a committed musician, producer and songwriter with a heavy focus on the capitalist reality around him. In short, he’s realised how the game has been rigged from the start – and he’s here to sing about it. Not one, but 12 times. ‘Half Ball Pit Half Bloodbath’ is the name of Fry’s latest album, and also the name of his only single, then remixed numerous times, taking different shapes and adventuring into numerous genres and vibes.
Certainly a very creative endeavour, the original ‘Half Ball Pit Half Bloodbath’ is one of the most quirky and unique compositions we have heard recently. Inspired by a wide pool of sources, including playful electronica, avant-garde textures and Kraftwerk-esque robotic energy, the track cuts through the noise with his bold and loud character, even introducing a striking distorted guitar. Amidst such sonic richness, Devin James Fry delivers intriguing, unapologetic spoken words.
Delving into his lyricism, the Denver-based talent explains: “I’m angry at the rich. Arrogant, mostly white male twerps who build heedless corporations that sacrifice workers and the planet for profit. One of the hellish parts of surviving capitalism is feeling complicit in it. This song’s a Fuck You to that creeping complicity. I wanted to say it, and say it again, and keep saying it.”
Devin’s music has been withdrawn from Spotify as a protest.
