It’s been just over a year since 2024’s ‘THIS FEELING’, yet Dan Cooney doesn’t seem to have lost his appetite for striking alt-rock and emo goodness. If ever, the American musician is even more committed to his craft. ‘NEXT SPRING’ is the perfect evidence of that; Cooney’s latest effort, the track raises the intensity a fair bit, with heavier guitar tones and Dan’s powerful and soaring vocals completing the sonic picture.
Partly written in 2023 during a recording session with Focus Jordan, the single was then picked up recently, with frequent collaborator Joe Tragedy helping Cooney achieve his maximum potential. Despite his eclectic past, Dan has now decided to fully turn his attention towards alt-rock and emo territories, a choice that we are happy with; his cathartic vocal tone is a perfect match for it. Citing references such as Basement, Title Fight, and Knuckle Puck, it’s clear that the Long Island-based artist has found his niche.
Speaking about the inspiration behind the piece, Cooney explains: “The lyric “don’t give me one more damn brass ring” is my favorite lyric that I’ve written in a long time. That basically sums up the entire song. ‘Brass Ring’ is figurative for always climbing that ladder and being quite close but always seemingly coming up short. This song is me saying that I’m tired of the brass rings.”
