Cupid Spell Debut with Nostalgic Lynchian Cut ‘Look Alike’

The keen reader will already be familiar with Josh Kreuzman, the dreamer behind Twice Dark’s enigmatic darkwave efforts. Hailing from Bloomington, Indiana, the talented musician and producer has recently returned in a new artistic setting. Teaming up with fellow singer and creative Mandy Buffington, the pair has launched Cupid Spell, a project that promises nostalgic synthpop tinges and a great deal of Lynchian lyricism.

‘Look Alike’ is the perfect evidence of that. Marking the project’s debut single, the track was actually written as a celebration of David Lynch’s expansive and mysterious work. Therefore, what is served by Cupid Spells is not pure, uplifting synth-pop; rather, a lo-fi, gloomy version of it, quite introspective and melancholic. Kreuzman and Buffington’s collective vocals are a perfect match for such vivid aural goodness, creating a wonderful contrast between male and female tones.

Overall, ‘Look Alike’ is indeed Lynchian; it provides a vision of ‘synth-pop’ that’s shrouded in secrecy and vaporous smoke. Quite otherworldly, perhaps ethereal. Citing the famous director’s main collaborators, Angelo Badalamenti and Julee Cruise, as further influences, it’s clear that Cupid Spell are on a mission to unite their love for music and cinema: so far, they have delivered what they promised.
